Manga Screentones Can Form New Patterns When the Page Is Resized

AI-generated photographic illustration; not documentary photography.

A manga panel looks clean in the drawing application, yet the exported page develops waves or bands across a dotted tone. The new pattern may come from interference between the tone and the way the image has been resized or displayed.

Clip Studio’s support guidance on moiré describes problems that can appear when tone information is exported or scaled. Its export documentation provides controls relevant to scaling and tone treatment. Use the guidance for your actual application and output.

Check the final destination early

Find the required pixel dimensions or print specification before finishing a long chapter. A platform may resize an uploaded page, adding another transformation after your own export.

Create a small test containing the tone patterns you intend to use. Export it at the planned size, view the actual file and, for a web destination, inspect the uploaded result. A clean working-canvas preview is only one stage of that test.

Preserve the editable source

Keep tone layers and the original artwork intact. Make output-specific changes in a copy or through export settings, so solving a web problem does not destroy the version needed for print.

Change one variable at a time: output dimensions, tone handling or another documented setting. Record which change improved the result. Avoid repeatedly resizing an already flattened file without knowing which stage introduced the pattern.

Inspect both the affected region close up and the page at normal reading size. A technical fix that removes interference but makes the tone too heavy may still weaken the drawing.

The goal is a reliable path from editable artwork to the reader’s page. Testing a few representative tones early is much less frustrating than discovering the same unwanted bands across every exported chapter.
